In his ARIBA nomination papers (1939) he stated that he had been in practice on his own account for the previous ten years (1928-1938) and did not mention his partnership with LT OBEL (1929-1934) in Durban (cf OBEL & GRANT), after the dissolution of which in 1934 he had practised independently in Durban. About 1919 he joined CHICK & BARTHOLOMEW's office in Durban as a draughtsman and sat the intermediate RIBA examination in 1928.
